Wison New Energies held a keel-laying ceremony for a floating production unit (FPU) on October 25, 2026, at its workshop in Nantong, China. This unit is designed to serve the Sakarya gas field in the Black Sea off Turkey.

Project Details

This floating production unit is being built for TPAO and has the capacity to process up to 25 million cubic meters of natural gas per day. This project is considered an important step towards Turkey's domestic energy independence. The keel-laying ceremony marks the entry into a major construction phase and signifies progress in the construction of this floating production unit.

Unit Performance and Specifications

This floating production unit will perform essential tasks in Phase 3 of the Sakarya field. These tasks include processing natural gas, compressing it, and exporting it. With a service life of 30 years, this unit will operate at a water depth of 2,150 meters. The Sakarya field is located at a depth of 2,150 meters and 170 kilometers from the Black Sea coast and is recognized as one of Turkey's main natural gas sources with confirmed reserves of 405 billion cubic meters.

The second phase of the Sakarya field, which produced initial gas in April 2023, is expected to meet approximately 30% of the country's gas needs by 2030. This information was released based on data provided by Ashley Sherman, upstream research director at Wood Mackenzie for the Caspian and Europe region.

Last year, a 300-meter floating production platform purchased from BW Offshore, formerly known as FPSO BW Opportunity and now named Osman Gazi, left the Bosphorus Strait and headed towards the Sakarya field. The project is continuously developing from the initial steel cutting to the start of construction on the floating platform. The transition from building hull blocks to hull assembly requires greater coordination on-site and overall project management. Wison New Energies, as an integrated EPCIC contractor, will carefully oversee all stages of the project based on its strengths to ensure compliance with stringent safety and quality standards and guarantee the orderly execution of the project.
