TotalEnergies announced its collaborations with national oil and gas companies to reduce methane gas through partnerships with Petronas in Malaysia, Sonangol in Angola, and Oil India (OIL) in India at the meeting of the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC) held in Abu Dhabi.
Cooperation Agreements and Technology Development
The French company signed a cooperation agreement with Petronas, the Japanese Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC), and JGC to assist in the development of the Southeast Asia Methane Emission Technology Evaluation Center (SEA METEC). This regional center, which will be based in Malaysia, is dedicated to evaluating measurement and monitoring technologies for methane gas across Southeast Asia.

The European giant will contribute to the development of SEA METEC by sharing its experiences gained over more than a decade. This center is the only dedicated establishment in Europe for evaluating methane detection and measurement technologies.
Strengthening Cooperation with Sonangol and Oil India
TotalEnergies has also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Sonangol to strengthen technical cooperation in reducing methane gas and decarbonization solutions in Angola. This agreement is based on experiences gained from AUSEA technology and includes identifying, measuring, and reducing methane gas, sharing best practices, methods, and technical expertise.
The two companies are collaborating to identify specific solutions for reducing methane gas and flaring gas, improving energy efficiency, supporting the electrification of facilities, and advancing carbon management solutions. Their collaboration also includes greenhouse gas reporting, technical training, knowledge sharing, and exploring financing opportunities, including potential support from the Global Methane and Flaring Reduction Fund (GFMR) of the World Bank.
Referring to the first campaign that utilized AUSEA technology to identify and measure methane gas at 20 sites managed by Oil India in Assam, TotalEnergies and Oil India are strengthening their collaboration with a second field campaign. The first campaign, which lasted for one month, provided Oil India with data to support greenhouse gas reporting and showcased AUSEA's capability to accurately identify and measure methane gas under various field conditions.
The second campaign will also last for one month and will extend the use of AUSEA to additional sites managed by Oil India, helping to strengthen cooperation between the two companies in reducing methane gas.
