Dolphin Drilling, the owner and operator of semi-submersible rigs in deep waters, has signed a sale agreement for the semi-submersible rig Blackford Dolphin. This rig, built in 1974, will be sold for $25 million to SPM Energy Shipping FZCO. The deal will be finalized on November 5, 2026, in Singapore and is expected to lead to a significant reduction in Dolphin Drilling's operational costs.
Sale Agreement Details
According to the signed Sale and Purchase Agreement (SPA), $10 million will be paid at the time of delivery of the rig, and another $15 million will be paid when SPM receives the first payment under the future drilling contract. This sale directly and significantly reduces the company's ongoing costs and eliminates the need for capital expenditures related to extending the rig's certification.

Additional Agreements with SPM
Dolphin Drilling has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SPM for managing future drilling contracts for this rig and another semi-submersible rig. This collaboration allows Dolphin Drilling to leverage its operational platform and technical expertise alongside SPM's strong commercial presence in India and surrounding regions.
These actions help Dolphin Drilling significantly reduce its financial risks while simultaneously lowering operational costs. The company also expects to generate more revenue in the future through the management of Blackford Dolphin and other rigs.
Dolphin Drilling improved its financial position at the end of the second quarter of 2026, reporting total liquidity of $55.1 million and a deferred debt of $556 million. With these actions, the company aims to strengthen its financial stability and improve its long-term outlook.
Ultimately, the market for semi-submersible rigs continues to face a supply shortage, and with increased investments in offshore developments, demand for these rigs is expected to rise. Therefore, Dolphin Drilling seeks to capitalize on new opportunities and enhance shareholder value through these transactions.
