Seyed Ismail Hosseini, a member of the Energy Commission of the Parliament, emphasized the necessity of national consensus to overcome energy challenges in wartime, and reported the possibility of electricity imbalance in winter due to increased gas consumption. He pointed to the desirable condition of liquid fuel reserves and expressed hope that the upcoming season will pass with minimal problems.
Energy Status of the Country
Hosseini stated on September 17: "The energy sector, including oil, gas, and electricity, is one of the country's strengths and a component of power, but unfortunately, in recent years, for various reasons, this sector has become one of the country's challenges."
He attributed mismanagement, weak oversight, and some actions taken in various sectors of the energy field as factors contributing to this challenge and added: "The country has adequate electricity production capacity, and the current electricity production capacity is close to 100,000 megawatts, but necessary optimization has not been carried out in consumption."
Electricity Challenges in Winter
The representative of Shiraz and Zarqan continued: "In the cooler seasons of the year, electricity challenges decrease, but during peak heat times, problems arise due to high consumption of cooling equipment."
Hosseini also discussed the electricity situation in winter, stating: "A significant portion of the country's electricity production capacity is related to thermal power plants, and with a sharp increase in gas consumption in residential and commercial sectors, the ability to supply gas to thermal power plants decreases."
He added: "Power plants use liquid fuels such as diesel and fuel oil to compensate for the reduced gas supply, but in any case, these conditions will bring challenges."
Hosseini emphasized that this assessment pertains to the normal conditions of the country, saying: "Even if there were no war, we would have faced imbalances in the energy sector, but now the country is in a wartime situation, and some infrastructures have been hit."
He also referred to fuel supply in the current conditions, stating: "Currently, the reserves in the tanks are at a desirable level; therefore, we hope that the upcoming winter will pass with minimal problems."
Hosseini emphasized that the Energy Commission and responsible entities in the energy sector are working to appropriately distribute the current production capacity among different consumption sectors, stating: "Measures must be taken so that people face the least problems and pressures."
