QatarEnergy, as the largest buyer of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States, has signed a contract worth 3 million tons of LNG annually with Woodside Energy Group Ltd. This agreement comes as part of Qatar's efforts to diversify its energy sources from the Middle East.

Contract Details

This contract includes the purchase of 3 million tons of LNG annually from the Louisiana LNG project, which is expected to conclude by 2029. Additionally, QatarEnergy signed an agreement with Cheniere Energy Inc. last week, which includes the purchase of 4 million tons of LNG annually from the early 2030s until 2054.

Implications and Challenges

Analysts believe that these contracts, while they cannot replace the locked-in LNG from the Gulf, will add to QatarEnergy's future portfolio. Some of the capacities of the company's Ras Laffan facilities in Qatar were damaged in the early days of the Iran war, and their repair will take several years. The company's development projects may face delays if conflicts continue.

Currently, QatarEnergy is forced to significantly reduce exports from its undamaged LNG units in the Gulf, as transportation through the Strait of Hormuz remains risky. While in October, a larger volume of Qatari LNG has exited the region compared to the previous month, there are concerns about a potential decrease in exports if U.S. attacks on Iran resume after the midterm elections.

The company has recently extended the execution deadline for some buyers in Europe and Asia until the end of the year.

Louisiana Project Details

The Woodside contract includes about 18% of the combined capacity of the Louisiana project, which is expected to reach 16.5 million tons per year. Last year, Woodside signed a 13-year contract with Uniper SE of Germany to supply 1 million tons of LNG annually from the same facility.
