The oil tanker Mentor, which was attacked on September 24 near Odessa, has been left adrift after losing connection with two tugboats. This incident has triggered a rescue operation and efforts to recover the damaged tanker.
Details of the Attack Incident
The oil tanker Mentor (with a capacity of 13,000 tons) was severely damaged during an attack by a drone resembling a "Shahed" from Russia. In this attack, the Ukrainian captain of the ship lost his life, and the rest of the crew were evacuated. Rescue Operations and Current Status
Two Turkish tugboats named Ramazan Bey and Ayaz Bey were attempting to tow the tanker towards Turkey when, during a storm in the Black Sea, they lost contact with the tanker. These ships contacted Romanian authorities for assistance, resulting in three crew members from one of the tugboats being transferred to another tugboat flying the Dutch flag named Odin. Romanian officials also stated that four other crew members refused to evacuate due to a lack of need for assistance and moved the damaged tugboat to an anchorage.
Currently, the oil tanker Mentor is moving towards Bulgarian waters without a crew, and Bulgarian authorities are monitoring its status. This tanker is carrying 11,000 tons of sunflower oil and is currently moving in the Shabla area in northern Bulgaria, close to the Romanian border.
Potential Consequences
The current situation of the oil tanker Mentor could have significant environmental and economic repercussions. In the event of an oil or sunflower oil spill, there would be serious risks to the Black Sea ecosystem. Additionally, instability in the region and the potential for collisions with other vessels in these waters could lead to further issues. Bulgarian authorities are planning to respond to this situation, and the tugboat Ramazan Bey has remained nearby as a backup for the tanker.
