The United States Maritime Foundation (USMF) plans to purchase the historic ship Providence to reopen it as a museum, educational, and tourist attraction in the port of Alexandria, Virginia. This ship, a replica of an 18th-century vessel, played a significant role in the American Revolution and was at risk of disappearing from the scene, as its previous owner, the Providence Ship Foundation, had suspended its educational and tourism programs in June.

History of the Ship Providence

The ship Providence is a reproduction of the sloop Providence, originally built in 1769 and part of John Brown's fleet from Providence. This ship was commissioned in 1775 as one of the first vessels of the Continental Navy of the United States and was renamed Providence. The name was chosen due to its connection to its hometown and the Rhode Island representatives in the Continental Congress. The passage of this law is why October 13 is celebrated as the anniversary of the establishment of the United States Navy.

Challenges and Future Plans

The construction of this replica ship, led by a young Harvard graduate named John Fitzho Miller, began in 1973 and was completed in 1976. The ship served as the official vessel of Rhode Island for many years and participated in tall ship events. In 2015, Providence faced a severe storm in Newport Harbor that caused significant damage. The Providence Ship Foundation purchased the ship in 2017 and decided to revive it as the center of a new maritime museum in Alexandria.

However, due to financial challenges, the foundation was forced to suspend its operations in June. In this situation, USMF stepped in and proposed to purchase Providence and its dock to the Alexandria Port Commission. This nonprofit foundation, established last year, hopes to soon become the owner of this ship and its dock and reactivate Providence for educational and tourism purposes.
