A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S has seen a significant increase in its shares in 2026 due to strong demand and supply chain disruptions. This Danish company has provided analysts with new reasons to reconsider their negative views on its stock. The company's shares have increased by nearly 60% this year, prompting it to update its financial forecasts twice during the summer.

Impact of Supply Chain Disruptions

Disruptions in the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz have limited ship capacity and shifted the supply-demand balance in favor of ship owners. However, as ship traffic resumes in the Red Sea, this support will gradually diminish. Analysts believe that the additional capacity could put significant pressure on freight rates in the long term.

However, analysts remain generally pessimistic. Of the 26 analysts monitored, only one has recommended buying the company's shares. Many doubt the sustainability of freight rates and other positive factors. HSBC Holdings Plc analyst, Parash Jain, while being the only analyst with a buy rating on A.P. Moller-Maersk shares, acknowledges that the momentum of freight rates will soon decline but believes that the company is in a better position compared to its long-term competitors.

Financial Forecasts and Concerns

Meanwhile, Barclays Plc analysts led by Marco Limite have stated that A.P. Moller-Maersk's financial situation is very strong for the reports to be released in November. In contrast, JPMorgan Chase & Co analysts, led by Alexia Dogani, have a more pessimistic view in the medium term and have advised caution. Following the second-quarter report, Dogani pointed out the "peak optimism" regarding the stock, suggesting a price target of 10,000 Danish kroner ($1,543), which is less than half the current stock price.

Analysts predict that the current levels of revenues and freight rates will not be sustainable. Dogani wrote in a note on August 31: "This strong cash generation in the short term is unlikely to lead to significant returns for shareholders, as investment in the ocean sector must increase to prevent a reduction in capacity share."

However, investing in A.P. Moller-Maersk has become considerably more challenging in 2026, as the company's shares are about 25% above the average 12-month price target among analysts. Additionally, interest in short selling has also decreased. According to S&P Global Market Intelligence data, the number of shares being borrowed, which indicates interest in short selling, has dropped from about 20% at the beginning of the year to around 10% currently.
