Hanwha Group is changing the ownership and management of Philly Shipyard, which it acquired nearly two years ago, in pursuit of U.S. military shipbuilding contracts. The group gained ownership of the shipyard by paying nearly $100 million in December 2024 and is now transferring 60% of its shares to Hanwha Defense USA, a subsidiary of Hanwha Aerospace.
Management and Strategic Changes
In the new agreement, RADM Tom Anderson has been appointed as the head of construction for this subsidiary. These changes are part of Hanwha Group's strategy to strengthen its presence in the U.S. shipbuilding and defense market. Hanwha aims to transform Philly Shipyard into a dual-purpose center for military and commercial shipbuilding.

Investment and Challenges
Hanwha Group has recently invested $350 million in upgrading shipbuilding equipment and is considering another investment worth $400 million. In the long term, there are plans for a $5 billion investment to expand production capacity and modernize operations at the shipyard. However, the shipyard has faced significant financial challenges, experiencing consecutive losses from 2018 to 2024.
Reports indicate that the group has faced losses in six consecutive quarters following the acquisition of Philly Shipyard, with an operational loss of over $14 million in the second quarter of this year alone. Hanwha is also seeking full certification for building U.S. military ships by 2028.
Hanwha Group has announced that it has increased its workforce at the shipyard to 2,500 and has recently secured a contract to build three special support ships for the U.S. government. These ships are designed based on the hulls of training vessels, and the group's goal is to increase its production capacity from 1.5 ships per year to 20 ships per year.
