Shares of AP Moller-Maersk A/S, one of the largest shipping lines in the world, faced a sharp decline following the announcement of new forecasts and third-quarter financial results. This drop was particularly reported at 11.6 percent on Thursday morning in the Copenhagen market.

Details of the New Forecasts

Management at AP Moller-Maersk stated in a release that the forecast for earnings before interest and taxes for 2026 is expected to be between $8 billion and $8.5 billion, which is lower than analysts' expectations of an average of $8.66 billion. While third-quarter revenue increased by 155 percent compared to last year, reaching $3.27 billion, this amount was also below the forecast of $3.61 billion.

Factors Influencing Revenue Decline

Miguel Emil Jensen, an analyst at AL Sydbank, stated that the main reasons for the failure in forecasts are attributed to weaker activities in the ocean shipping sector and higher costs than expected. He pointed to reduced activities in the Middle East and challenging weather conditions as two main factors. These points are particularly significant given that ongoing disruptions in the global supply chain have impacted shipping rates.

Furthermore, Mr. Jensen emphasized that the new forecasts indicate that fourth-quarter revenue is expected to be slightly lower than in the third quarter, which generally aligns with our expectations.

Consequences of Supply Chain Disruptions

The imbalance in global supply chains in recent years has contributed to rising shipping rates. Factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic, Houthi attacks that forced rerouting around the Red Sea, and ultimately the U.S. war with Iran disrupting traffic in the Strait of Hormuz are among the factors that have led to this increase. These issues also raise questions about the duration of these disruptions and their impact on the future of the shipping industry.

AP Moller-Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc responded to analysts by saying that "some analysts need to pay closer attention to the financial sheets." This remark reflects the pressures the company feels in the face of unmet expectations.
