The Revolution Wind offshore wind project, one of the largest renewable energy projects in the United States, has officially reached full operation. This project, with a capacity of 704 megawatts, is located off the eastern coast of the United States and is considered a significant achievement for the Danish company Ørsted.
Legal Challenges and Sanctions
This project has faced numerous challenges over the past years, particularly with work stoppage orders issued by the Trump administration. Work on this project was first halted in August 2025 due to national security concerns. Although a federal judge later allowed work to resume, in December 2025, the government issued another stop order that included five other offshore wind projects.

In the meantime, Ørsted fought legal challenges and ultimately succeeded in obtaining the necessary permits to continue work after about 87% progress on the project. Last September, the final wind turbine of the project was installed, and in October, Revolution Wind achieved commercial operation.
Financial Performance and Future of the Project
With the completion of the Revolution Wind project, Ørsted is reporting improved performance in its global portfolio. In its third-quarter results announcement, the company stated that earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) increased to 20.2 billion Danish kroner (3 billion dollars). This increase is primarily due to better wind conditions and high electricity prices.
However, Ørsted also reported a net loss of 728 million Danish kroner in the third quarter. This loss was due to asset devaluation and rising interest rates in U.S. projects. Greg Stanton, the company's CEO, stated that these trends have impacted their strategic priorities and led to stronger financial performance.
While Revolution Wind has reached full operation, legal and regulatory challenges are not yet over, and the U.S. Department of the Interior submitted a court permit request in October 2026 to review the initial approval for the construction and operation of this wind farm. This raises further questions about the government's approach to operational offshore wind projects.
Ultimately, Revolution Wind is recognized as a milestone in the U.S. offshore wind industry, especially as the previous government made significant efforts to limit new developments. However, projects currently under construction continue to progress despite legal challenges.
