The electricity connection project between Spain and France, being implemented by Red Eléctrica, has entered a new phase with 70% progress. This project is designed to increase the electricity exchange capacity between the two countries from 2.8 gigawatts to 5 gigawatts. Currently, the installation of underground cables is underway.
Technical Details of the Project
This electricity connection, located in the Bay of Biscay, connects Gatika in Spain to Cubnezais in France. Underground HVDC cables, 13 kilometers long, will be transferred from the Gatika converter station to the shores of Lemoiz, where they will connect to underwater cables.

Red Eléctrica has recently completed the second phase of underwater cable installation using a cable-laying ship named Monna Lisa. In the Bay of Biscay, the first phase of this project was completed in August with the cable-laying ship NKT named Victoria, which was responsible for installing the initial 65 kilometers of the route.
Future Plans and Further Progress
With the completion of the installation of all underwater cables in the Biscay section, plans will continue for work in the areas near the shores of Gipuzkoa from November to February, and it is expected that all sections will be installed in French waters by summer. Additionally, Red Eléctrica has reported that the construction of the Gatika converter station is also progressing well, with civil engineering works completed and electromechanical assembly stages underway.
This project not only helps improve electricity exchange between the two countries but also leads to increased reliability and stability of electricity networks in Europe. Given the energy challenges and the need for renewable energy transmission, such projects are of special importance in line with the environmental and economic goals of European countries.
