Norway has taken a significant step towards the development of renewable energy by allocating 3.94 billion Norwegian kroner (equivalent to $430 million) to two floating offshore wind projects. These projects include the installation of four next-generation turbines along the coast of Karmøy, Norway, under the supervision of the state-owned company Enova.

Project Details

Two developers, namely "Fortius Offshore Wind" and "Fram Wind Solutions," have been selected to receive financial support. This selection followed a competitive process that attracted five applications. Fortius, owned by the company "Deep Wind Offshore," will receive 2 billion Norwegian kroner, while Fram Wind Solutions, supported by "BW Offshore" and "Grieg Capital," will receive 1.94 billion Norwegian kroner.

Electricity Generation Capacity Forecast

Each of the projects will consist of two floating turbines with a capacity of 18.5 megawatts, totaling a generation capacity of 74 megawatts. These installations are expected to produce approximately 300 gigawatt-hours of electricity annually, equivalent to the consumption of about 15,000 households. Both developers plan to install their turbines over the next five years, and funding disbursement will depend on the realization of the projects.

Testing New Technologies

These projects are seen as a test for floating foundations capable of supporting large turbines, anchoring systems, and new methods in the construction, installation, and operation of offshore wind energy. Enova has evaluated these proposals based on criteria including projected electricity generation per kroner of funding, technology scalability, environmental impact, and future cost reduction.

The development of renewable energy in Norway, particularly in the field of floating offshore wind, could serve as a successful model for other countries and help reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Norway, as a pioneer in renewable energy globally, is seeking to strengthen its infrastructure and increase the share of clean energy in the country's energy mix.
