Tankers Face New Challenges Due to Low Water Levels in the Rhine River

The drop in water levels of the Rhine River below the transport threshold has created new challenges for tankers and related industries. On September 28, 2026, the water level at the key point of Kaub fell to 3 centimeters below the permitted threshold, which is particularly concerning for the transport of energy and industrial goods in Central Europe.

Impact on Shipping Costs

The decrease in the Rhine River's water levels comes at a time when the cost of transporting diesel from Rotterdam to Karlsruhe increased by 15% on Monday. Meanwhile, shipping costs for this route have more than doubled this month. The current dry conditions and unfavorable weather forecasts have created further problems for companies operating in this sector.

Economic and Industrial Consequences

The Rhine River is recognized as a key transport corridor for chemical industries, refineries, and steel mills in Europe. Companies such as BASF SE, Bayer, Covestro AG, and Shell plc are directly affected by this drop in water levels. This situation has forced some chemical producers to reduce production or declare force majeure for certain products, putting additional pressure on the European chemical industry.

Arne Lohmann Rasmussen, Head of Research at Global Risk Management, has noted that replacing the shipping capacity of the Rhine will be difficult and may require 3,000 tanker trucks daily to compensate for oil shipments. He stated that "the drop in the Rhine's water levels is the last thing the German economy needs."

Forecast for the Rhine River Water Levels

According to forecasts from the Federal Institute of Hydrology in Germany, the water level at Kaub may again fall below the transport threshold. Dry conditions are expected to continue this week, but river levels are anticipated to start rising in early October.

These problems indicate a fundamental shift in access to water resources and compel companies to adapt to new climatic conditions. This situation poses serious challenges, especially for companies that are unprepared.
