Saeed Zaghari, spokesperson for the Anti-Smuggling Headquarters, mentioned the reduction of fuel smuggling in an interview with the media, stating that with the implementation of a 24-article guideline for preventing and combating fuel smuggling, the amount of smuggling has decreased from 21 million liters daily to zero. Zaghari added that this smuggling used to cost the country an average of 8 billion dollars annually.
Reasons for smuggling and preventive measures
Zaghari further pointed out the reasons for the inclination towards fuel smuggling, saying that the price difference of fuel in Iran and neighboring countries, especially the low price of diesel in Iran (300 tomans) compared to the high prices in neighboring countries, is one of the main factors. He also noted that the approach of the Headquarters is no longer hardware-based and is focused on preventive and software management using smart systems.
Results and achievements of the implemented plans
Zaghari referred to a daily saving of about 4 million liters of fuel due to the implementation of the emergency card management plan in border and domestic provinces. He stated that in Kerman province, surveys show that public satisfaction has increased from 80 to 88 percent and long queues for refueling have decreased. This plan has led to the elimination of emergency cards and an increase in the fuel quota for the public.
The spokesperson for the Anti-Smuggling Headquarters also mentioned the establishment of smart systems in all organizations and ministries involved in the import and export of goods. Zaghari emphasized that these systems will help identify and proactively combat smuggling channels.
Overall, Zaghari stressed the need for cultural development and raising public awareness, noting that any purchase of smuggled goods harms domestic producers, and public cooperation in this regard can aid the fight against smuggling.
