The oil tanker BYB Othello, owned by Turkey, requested assistance at 02:40 AM on November 6, 2023. This 5,000-ton vessel ran aground due to a technical failure in its main engine near the Anadolu lighthouse in Istanbul.
Details of the Incident and Crew Evacuation
Reports indicate that weather conditions were extremely unfavorable, which prevented the Turkish Coast Guard from conducting a maritime rescue of the crew. Therefore, the evacuation operation was carried out using a traditional evacuation system called "Breach's Boy." All 13 crew members were safely transferred to shore during this operation.
Status of the Ship and Its Records
The oil tanker BYB Othello, built in 2008 and registered in Saint Kitts and Nevis, was en route to Ukraine. In the past 17 months, this ship has been identified with 90 deficiencies by port authorities during six inspections. The last inspection, conducted about a week ago, included 17 issues, including defects in the hull and structural condition of the ship, as well as problems related to the maintenance of lifeboats and fire safety.
This incident has raised concerns not only about the safety of commercial vessels in the area but also highlights the challenges in managing emergency situations at sea. The Turkish Coast Guard dispatched rescue vessels to the incident site in an attempt to bring the situation under control. However, the severity of the storm and adverse weather conditions prevented maritime rescue operations.
Potential Consequences for the Shipping Industry
This incident may have repercussions for the shipping industry in the region. Given the multiple deficiencies of the BYB Othello, non-compliance with safety standards could lead to increased scrutiny and inspections by port authorities. Additionally, this issue could impact the safety of maritime travel and the commercial fleet in the area.
