The National Security Multi-Mission Vessel (NSMV) Empire State VII is returning earlier than expected to the SUNY Maritime Training Base due to the cancellation of its 170-day national security mission. This return follows repairs and improvements funded by MARAD. According to officials, this change is significant due to the unexpected impacts it has had on the training programs of students.

Impact of Mission Cancellation on Education

Captain Steven Carmel, the maritime director, has noted that this tanker was actively used for training during the academic year, and the cancellation of the mission has soon created problems for educational programs. He emphasizes that similar cases must be managed more carefully in the future. According to Carmel, "Tankers should not be used as a substitute for shore infrastructure. Whenever this happens, problems arise that we have faced here."

Challenges and Solutions

SUNY Maritime University has also pointed out that the 170-day duration of this mission could impact training courses and degree issuance. Admiral John O'Connor, the university president, stated that "the only time we do not have students for training and learning on the tanker is when they are on break." However, the university has announced that it is seeking solutions to continue educational activities alongside these challenges.

Carmel has also stated that in collaboration with the heads of maritime universities, he is working to find the best combination of policies for better management of tanker activations and to prevent similar problems in the future. He emphasized that "we must be able to execute a mission like this without any drama. Effortlessly, and get the job done."

Ultimately, the good news is that during the short time under the control of the Navy, the tanker Empire State VII has performed well and is now returning to the base in better condition.
