QatarEnergy signed long-term liquefied natural gas (LNG) purchase agreements from the United States and other producers on October 29, 2023. These agreements are designed to secure revenue in the event of disruptions in exports from the Strait of Hormuz, which is one of the most important energy export transit points in the world.

Details of the Agreements

QatarEnergy announced on Thursday that it recently signed a 20-year agreement to purchase 3 million tons per year from the Woodside facilities in the United States. Additionally, last week, it signed two agreements with Cheniere Energy to purchase up to 4 million tons per year until 2054 from the Sabine Pass and Corpus Christi facilities. The total of these agreements over the past two weeks amounts to 7 million tons per year.

Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, CEO of QatarEnergy, emphasized that this strategy will help generate revenue during critical times. He pointed out that with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, gas prices will significantly increase, allowing QatarEnergy to earn more revenue.

Challenges and Future Strategies

QatarEnergy halted LNG production in early March 2023 due to missile attacks from Iran on its facilities and declared a force majeure status. The company currently expects this situation to continue until the end of 2026. Al-Kaabi also noted that the inability to transport has negatively impacted the company's revenue.

As one of the largest LNG producers in the world, QatarEnergy accounts for about one-fifth of global LNG exports. Given the current conditions and existing threats, Al-Kaabi believes that collaboration with other producers and the signing of new agreements with them will continue this year. He also mentioned ongoing negotiations with companies like Venture Global, which are progressing to secure 3 million tons of LNG.

Al-Kaabi concluded by stating that QatarEnergy can leverage its large fleet of about 200 LNG tankers and is poised to become the largest gas trading platform in the world soon. This strategy will help QatarEnergy dominate global markets and capitalize on price fluctuations.
