Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, traded at around $108.5 per barrel on Monday, showing a decrease of about 2.8% from Friday's closing price. This price drop comes as negotiations about reopening the Strait of Hormuz are ongoing between Iranian negotiators in Qatar.

The Role of the Strait of Hormuz in the Oil Market

U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude has also fallen by about 3%, dropping below $100 per barrel. However, there are no signs of progress in the negotiations. Donald Trump, the President of the United States, has publicly kept military options open, and in this context, Benjamin Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel, has advised him to attack Iran immediately after the midterm elections.

Maritime Transportation Conditions and Sanctions

Maritime transportation through the Strait of Hormuz, which normally handles about one-fifth of the world's oil, has been severely disrupted since the war began in late February. Abbas Araqchi, Iran's Foreign Minister, explained in an interview that a plan under consideration could lead to the reopening of the strait within at least two days, provided that a series of conditions are met by Washington.

Iranian officials have previously called for an end to the U.S. Navy's maritime blockade of Iranian ports, the lifting of sanctions, and a halt to conflicts in regional fronts. Trump stated at a public event in Florida that negotiations are going "well" but did not consider the Iranians to be "very reliable."

Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs has predicted that the geopolitical risk premium is currently about $27 per barrel. This has significantly impacted crude oil prices in recent months.

In recent days, the UK Maritime Trade Operations Center received a report indicating that a projectile struck a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz. This incident also shows that tensions in this vital maritime chokepoint continue, and supply risks remain strong.
