Masoud Pezeshkian, the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, issued a binding 5-point directive outlining the roadmap for managing fuel consumption within the government. This decision was made in response to the intensifying challenges related to energy imbalance and the increasing consumption of petroleum products.
Remote Work to Reduce Fuel Consumption
According to the second clause of this directive, all executive agencies are required to maximize the use of legal capacities of the "Remote Work Regulations" to change the physical presence process for two groups of employees to remote: employees with jobs suitable for remote work and employees residing in suburban areas. This decision aims to reduce the demand for intra-city and inter-city travel and curb daily gasoline consumption in metropolitan areas.

Implementation of Car-Free Day
In the first clause of this directive, the President emphasized reducing traffic with personal vehicles and established a specific executive mechanism. All government agencies are required to designate a specific day each week as "Car-Free Day," so that managers and employees can only attend work via public transportation (metro and bus). Additionally, senior managers of agencies are required to design incentive mechanisms to enhance personnel motivation in using clean transportation.
The third clause of this resolution sets an important deadline for renewing the vehicle fleet of the public sector. All executive agencies are required to retire and scrap outdated and fuel-consuming organizational vehicles as soon as possible. In securing replacement fleets, agencies are only permitted to use fully electric (EV), gas-powered (CNG), or hybrid vehicles.
Emphasis on Municipal Responsibilities
This directive also mandates the Tehran municipality and other metropolitan areas to synergize infrastructure and facilitate government employees' travel through urban bus and rail lines. This action aims to ease the use of public transportation and reduce urban traffic.
Finally, this directive emphasizes that members of the Cabinet must present their concrete and operational proposals to realize the above topics and address the obstacles related to the First Vice President. These new decisions are designed to save fuel consumption and reduce air pollution in metropolitan areas, which can have positive effects on improving urban quality of life.
