Maersk has officially confirmed the order for 26 large container ships, turning the rumors that have circulated for years about the expansion of the company's fleet into reality. Each of these ships has a capacity of 18,600 TEU and is equipped with dual-fuel engines capable of operating on liquefied natural gas (LNG). The delivery of these ships is scheduled for the years 2029 and 2030.
Order Details and Fleet Expansion Outlook
Maersk has refrained from disclosing the names of the manufacturing yards and the value of the contracts. However, reports indicate that the company is looking to order around 40 additional LNG dual-fuel main ships, which include vessels with capacities of at least 24,000 TEU as well as ships in the range of 18,000 to 20,000 TEU. Additionally, maritime brokers have pointed to available options for six additional 18,600 TEU ships at New Times Shipbuilding.

Developments in the Maritime Transport Market
In February, Maersk also placed an order for eight LNG dual-fuel ships with a capacity of 18,600 TEU from New Times, which are set to be delivered in 2029 and 2030. Maersk's renewed desire to expand its fleet comes at a time when the company's orders have been relatively limited compared to competitors such as MSC, CMA CGM, and COSCO. According to available statistics, Maersk's operational fleet has a capacity of approximately 4.73 million TEU, of which 1.21 million TEU is currently on order. The order for 26 new ships alone represents an increase of 483,600 TEU in the company's fleet capacity.
