Maersk has recently confirmed that it has ordered 26 large container ships as part of its fleet renewal program. This new order represents about 10% of the total capacity of the company's current fleet, and the ships are expected to be added to the fleet in 2029 and 2030.
Order Details and Ship Features
The new ships have a capacity of 18,600 TEU and are designed with dual-fuel engines that allow for the use of liquefied gas. Compared to other large ships in the industry, especially those with a capacity of 24,000 TEU, these ships are recognized as the largest in the Maersk fleet. The largest Maersk ships are of the Triple E Class, which were added to the fleet between 2013 and 2019.

Industry Analysis and Competition
Given the increasing competition in the maritime transport industry, Maersk had also announced a previous order to the shipbuilding company New Times in China in February 2026. This order included eight large ships that are set to be delivered in 2029 and 2030. Analysts predict that Maersk may reach 40 new ships with an order increase, valued at over $9 billion.
The development of Maersk's new fleet comes at a time when the company has reported more positive financial results than expected. This indicates strong demand and steady but slow growth in the industry. Maersk has also pointed out severe market fluctuations and the impact of geopolitical events, including unrest in the Red Sea that has caused changes in shipping routes.
