The French company LD Armateurs (LDA) has acquired three platform support vessels currently under construction to convert them into cable-laying ships. This move aims to expand LDA's presence in the underwater communications market, and these vessels are expected to soon engage in cable-laying operations.
Details of the Vessels and Delivery Timeline
The three vessels are scheduled to be delivered in the second quarter of 2027 and will then be sent to an unspecified shipyard for conversion. Once the conversion process is completed, these vessels are expected to enter service in the first quarter of 2028. Each of these vessels will have a cable-carrying capacity of 2800 tons and will be equipped for the installation, maintenance, and repair of underwater cables.

Efforts to Meet Growing Demand
LDA, with over 25 years of experience in underwater cable-laying operations, has stated that this investment is aimed at meeting the increasing demand for installation and repair capacity as the global fleet requires upgrades due to aging. LDA has previously converted offshore vessels into cable-laying service ships, including the Ile de Molène, which was brought into service in 2022 after an extensive conversion program.
LDA's recent investment follows the delivery of a multi-purpose DP2 vessel named TVO Mariner to its subsidiary, LD TravOcean, in September. This subsidiary specifically operates in the installation and protection of underwater cables.
Human Resource Development and Arrival of New Vessels
In addition to the three support vessel conversions, LDA is launching a training academy to support the recruitment and development of personnel in its expanding fleet. This initiative will also assist in the arrival of three new methanol-capable ro-ro vessels that are being constructed to support Airbus's logistics operations. The first of this type, Spirit of Toulouse, has recently completed the installation of six Norsepower rotor sails.
