Australia participated with 65 representatives as the largest national delegation at the Interferry2026 international conference, which is the fiftieth annual conference of this industry, held in Bangkok, Thailand. This conference took place from October 31 to November 4, 2026, at the Shangri-La Hotel Bangkok and focused on the state of the ferry industry globally under the theme "Stronger Than Ever... Together".

Introduction to the Conference and Its Programs

This conference was hosted by Chao Phraya Express Boat and included two days of keynote sessions, panels of ferry industry leaders, an exhibition, and a technical tour. Additionally, celebrations were held to mark five decades of Interferry's activities. According to David Good, CEO of AIMEX, the high number of Australian representatives reflects the scale and international credibility of the country's commercial maritime industry.

Economic Impact of Australia's Maritime Industry

The commercial maritime industry in Australia provides 137,262 full-time jobs annually and contributes $25.16 billion to the national economy. Additionally, this industry generates an annual output of $50.93 billion. David Good further stated, "Water transport has the largest share in this industry, and ferries constitute a significant part of it."

Another positive aspect of this conference was the strong presence of Australian companies at the exhibition, showcasing their capabilities in design, construction, propulsion, safety, and ferry maintenance. Notable companies present at the exhibition included Austal, Ayres Composite Panels, and Incat Tasmania.

Highlights of the Conference

One of the highlights of the conference was a presentation by Tommy Eriksson, founder and director of Aus Ships Group based in Brisbane, who spoke about the company's fully electric passenger ferry currently under construction. This 18-meter vessel can carry 80 passengers and operates with two Volvo Penta IPS450E electric motors powered by a 460-kilowatt-hour battery system. This vessel is designed as Australia's first electric passenger ferry with commercial standards and full accessibility, and it is expected to be completed in early 2027.

Future Developments and Hosting of Upcoming Conferences

The next Interferry2027 conference will be held in the Aland Islands in Finland, hosted by Viking Line. Additionally, Quebec City in Canada will host this conference in 2028. Brisbane is also striving to host Interferry in 2030 or 2031, which could be a great opportunity to showcase Australia's ferry capabilities to the world.

David Good concluded by saying, "Bangkok was a fitting location to celebrate Interferry's 50th anniversary, and Australia made a strong presence at this event. We will strive to continue this momentum and bring an even stronger presence to Mariahamn next year. Bringing Interferry to Brisbane before the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games could showcase the capabilities of Australia's ferry industry to the world."
