The Swedish industrial group Alfa Laval has signed an agreement worth $700 million (equivalent to 6.85 billion Swedish Krona) to acquire the maritime software company NAVTOR. This agreement is intended to expand the group's digital maritime transport portfolio and is expected to be finalized in the first quarter of 2027, pending regulatory approval.
Details of the Agreement and Its Impacts
NAVTOR, founded in 2011 in the city of Egersund, Norway, has approximately 400 employees in 13 offices worldwide and provides services to customers in over 90 countries. Alfa Laval expects this company to generate about $194 million in revenue this year. Tom Eriksson, CEO of Alfa Laval, stated: “With this acquisition, we will expand our digital capabilities at a time when instantaneous decision-making is becoming increasingly complex.”

Transformation in the Maritime Software Industry
NAVTOR initially grew as a specialist in electronic navigation and has now transformed into a comprehensive software business in various areas such as voyage planning, fleet monitoring, vessel performance, and digital logbooks. The company has also continued to expand through several acquisitions and mergers. In 2020, American technology investor Accel-KKR acquired a majority stake in NAVTOR, and in subsequent years, the company has acquired other firms such as Tres Solutions and Ingenium Marine.
Alfa Laval also acquired StormGeo in 2021 for 3.63 billion Swedish Krona and has continued to build its maritime software portfolio. This trend was accelerated last week with the acquisition of Portchain, which has created a network connecting shipping lines to over 200 container ports, covering more than 40% of the global container terminal capacity.
The acquisition of NAVTOR adds another layer to Alfa Laval's strategy. The company recently announced that an internal review at NAVTOR identified unspecified compliance issues, prompting the Norwegian company to strengthen its internal controls and compliance programs. However, Alfa Laval is confident that these issues will be resolved soon.
The financing for this acquisition will be through a combination of Alfa Laval's cash and existing financing arrangements, and it is expected to have no short-term impact on the group's margins.
