K Shipbuilding, Sejin Heavy Industries and ClassNK have recently signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on the design of liquefied gas carriers (LPG). This agreement aims to comply with the new amendments to the IGC Code and improve the safety of maritime transport of liquefied gases. These amendments are expected to be approved at the MSC 112 meeting scheduled for December this year and will come into effect on July 1, 2028.

Details of LPG Ship Design

According to this memorandum, K Shipbuilding will design 9,000 cubic meter LPG ships based on the amendments to the IGC Code. Sejin Heavy Industries will also participate in the development of the cargo tank design of the ships, utilizing wide plate bending technology. ClassNK will be responsible for reviewing the design based on the amendments to the IGC Code.

Benefits of New Technologies in Ships

The ships developed in this project will be equipped with Energy Saving Devices (ESDs) aimed at improving operational efficiency. By using technologies such as Rudder Bulb and Energy Saving Fins, these ships are expected to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These measures could have a positive impact on the environment and the shipping industry.

Developing LPG ships in compliance with international standards not only contributes to the safety of liquefied gas transport but can also lead to reduced operational costs and improved energy efficiency in the maritime transport industry. This memorandum represents a close collaboration between the three companies to advance innovation and efficiency in the maritime sector.
