Hyuk Kim has started his role as the new president of Hanwha Philadelphia Shipyard today. In this position, he will be responsible for leading the expansion and transformation of the shipyard into a dual-purpose shipbuilding facility. Kim has been appointed in place of David Kim, who played a significant role in Hanwha's acquisition of the shipyard in 2024.

Hyuk Kim's Experience and Expertise

Hyuk Kim has over 25 years of experience in military and commercial shipbuilding and has previously worked at Hanwha Ocean as well as Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering. This appointment aims to strengthen the shipbuilding capabilities and improve the operational performance of the facility.

The agreement to purchase Hanwha Philadelphia, a shipbuilding facility located in Philadelphia, is part of a larger strategy to revitalize shipbuilding in the United States. Hyuk Kim will report to Tom Anderson, president of HDUSA shipbuilding.

New Contracts and the Future of the Facility

In July, Hanwha Philadelphia secured a shipbuilding contract for the Missile Defense Agency, marking the first new construction contract under Hanwha's ownership. Additionally, HDUSA was recently selected by TOTE Services to build a medium landing ship for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, representing another step in the facility's expansion into defense shipbuilding.

Earlier this year, HDUSA opened a new office at the facility to lay the groundwork for defense work and increase shipbuilding capacity. Hyuk Kim will leverage his experiences in large-scale shipbuilding at Hanwha Ocean in South Korea to enhance the capabilities of the Philadelphia facility.

Kim stated, "Hanwha Philadelphia is a cornerstone of Hanwha's commitment to revitalizing American shipbuilding, and I am honored to lead this new chapter of its growth." He emphasized the importance of close collaboration with employees, customers, and the local community to build a stronger and more capable American shipyard.
