HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) have recently completed the concept verification stage for the breakerless medium voltage direct current (MVDC) power system. This system is designed to provide approximately 30 megawatts of power for large commercial vessels, allowing owners to maximize energy efficiency and enable high-capacity power supply.

Features of MVDC Technology

The breakerless MVDC system includes advanced controls and fault management capabilities that support safe and resilient energy distribution. Given the growth in ship sizes and the increasing demand for high-capacity power distribution, this technology will play a significant role in the future of the maritime industry.

Comments from HD KSOE and HHI Officials

Patrick Ryan, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of ABS, stated: "Large ships have greater demands from their power systems, and MVDC technology offers a promising path for increased efficiency and capacity. This collaboration with HD KSOE and HHI provides owners and shipyards with a clearer view of the potential of this technology and supports the development of ABS guidelines for MVDC."

Sang-Hyun Kim, Senior Vice President of the Electrification Center at HD KSOE, added: "With the completion of the feasibility stage in 2025 and the concept verification now achieved, our timeline for delivering advanced marine MVDC systems is rapidly accelerating. We are committed to optimizing this breakerless technology and setting a new standard for safe and high-capacity electrification in the maritime industry."

As the maritime industry moves towards high-capacity electrification, ABS continues to collaborate with technology developers and shipbuilders to provide the necessary technical guidance to support this electrification.
