Hapag-Lloyd has been announced as the winner of the first tender for low-carbon transportation services. This tender was held under the supervision of ZEMBA, with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the supply chains of participating companies. Given the importance of climate change, such initiatives can play a significant role in mitigating the negative impacts of maritime transport.
Tender Details and Fuels Used
In this tender, Hapag-Lloyd utilized liquid biomethane to meet transportation needs. This fuel is recognized as a sustainable and low-carbon option that can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, ZEMBA has again introduced Hapag-Lloyd and North Sea Container Line as winners for the tender scheduled for 2027. Under these contracts, Hapag-Lloyd intends to use e-methanol on intercontinental trade routes, while NCL will utilize green ammonia in its services in Northern Europe.

Environmental and Economic Implications
With the implementation of these projects, it is expected that approximately 120,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions will be prevented over three years starting from 2027. These efforts are not only beneficial for the environment but can also help participating companies achieve their greenhouse gas reduction goals. Experts believe that such initiatives can enhance supply chain efficiency and reduce costs associated with compliance with environmental regulations.
ZEMBA has also announced that members of this union will pay additional costs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the use of alternative fuels. The environmental benefits of these initiatives will be distributed among participating companies through a “book and claim” system, meaning that companies can account for emission reductions without needing to transport their goods on specific vessels that consume renewable fuels.
