Pemex (Pemex) has created increasing concerns in Mexico's coastal communities by recording nearly 100 oil leaks in 2026. These leaks have particularly occurred in the coastal areas of the Gulf of Mexico, where residents suffer from beach pollution and damage to their livelihoods.

Consequences of Leaks on Daily Life

In early March, 31-year-old Andrés Palma was watching his children when he noticed the pollution of the beach sand with oil substances. This pollution was the result of a major oil leak that occurred in February, leading to a 30-day fishing ban in the area. Reports indicate that the source of the pollution was a leaking pipeline in the Abkatun oil field in the Gulf of Mexico.

After the ban was lifted, fishermen like Palma still faced a severe drop in fish prices and concerns about its pollution. While previously, the price of a kilogram of Sierra fish was 60 Mexican pesos, it has now dropped to 10 pesos. This reflects the dire economic impacts resulting from oil leaks.

Ineffective Policies and Weak Oversight

The Mexican government initially denied any connection with Pemex, but in April confirmed that three government officials were dismissed due to their inability to control pollution and inform the public. Statistics show that over the past four years, Pemex has reported nearly 100 leaks per year, significantly higher than previous figures.

Frequent oil leaks have not only affected residents' livelihoods but have also caused serious damage to the environment. Residents of these areas complain about polluted beaches, dead wildlife, and their devastated livelihoods. According to Viridiana Lazaro, an environmental activist, this data indicates the need to reconsider fossil fuel energy models that endanger human lives and the environment.

Monitoring oil leaks from Pemex is challenging due to discrepancies in reported statistics to different entities. From the beginning of 2014 to the end of 2025, the company reported only 798 leaks to financial entities, while the figures reported in its sustainability reports reach 5,517 cases between 2020 and 2024.

These discrepancies in reports highlight the need for better oversight and management of oil leaks. Pemex has not responded to multiple interview requests, and concerns about insufficient investment in environmental protection and system improvements continue.
