Ras Al Khaimah, as one of the emirates of the United Arab Emirates, announced on October 23, 2023, that all beaches in this emirate will be closed until further notice. This decision was made one day after an oil spill in coastal waters and the closure of beaches in neighboring emirates, including Umm Al-Quwain and Sharjah.

Details of the Oil Spill and Precautionary Measures

The Public Services Department of Ras Al Khaimah announced the closure of the beaches in a statement released by the General Command of Ras Al Khaimah Police. No specific reason was given for this decision. However, the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment announced on October 22 that efforts to control the oil spill from a tanker are ongoing and environmental assessments are being conducted.

Additionally, all beaches and coastal areas around Umm Al-Quwain have been temporarily closed to allow technical teams to conduct necessary assessments and determine appropriate safety and marine protection measures. The ministry has advised fishermen and other sea users to avoid affected areas and follow official instructions.

Consequences of the Oil Spill and Environmental Concerns

Sharjah authorities have also closed Al Hamriyah beaches as a precaution. This action comes amid significant concerns about maritime security and the environmental consequences resulting from recent conflicts in the region. Given that the oil spill in the Persian Gulf has become one of the largest oil spills in recent years, concerns about environmental damage have immediately increased.

UAE officials have yet to disclose the name of the tanker involved in this incident and have not identified the cause of the spill. Meanwhile, residents in some areas of Sharjah, Ajman, and Umm Al-Quwain have reported an unpleasant odor, but the UAE Ministry of Environment has stated that this odor poses no health risks.
