The tanker Agioi Fanendes, registered under the Maltese flag, departed on October 23, 2026, to deliver the first shipment of Russian diesel to the United States. This cargo, which includes 298,000 barrels of diesel (approximately 40,000 metric tons), is regarded as the first Russian diesel shipment in recent years.

Details of the cargo and tanker route

The tanker Agioi Fanendes, built in 2019 and managed by Eastern Mediterranean Maritime from Greece, has departed from the port of Primorsk and is currently located in the Baltic Sea. Although its initial destination was announced as New York, the tanker’s AIS signal has now changed to “for orders.” This change has led to speculation regarding the finalization of documents or attempts to reduce attention to the cargo.

Russian officials had previously announced that the shipment was underway and that the final documentation was being completed. According to sources, one of the challenges in this regard is payment issues due to existing sanctions on Russia. The U.S. Treasury Department has also been seeking ways to circumvent these restrictions.

Arrival date and economic implications

Potential dates for the arrival of this shipment in the United States range from November 7 to 10. The timing of this shipment is such that it is unlikely to arrive before the U.S. elections on November 3. These elections are crucial for determining control of Congress and the Senate, and former President Donald Trump has been vigorously campaigning in the final days before the election to maintain a Republican majority, emphasizing the volatility of diesel prices.

Diesel prices in the United States have risen to an average of over $6 per gallon, with some areas reaching $7 or more. These prices are recognized as a major concern for the U.S. economy, as diesel is used in various sectors including agriculture and transportation. Trump has claimed in a media post that Iran is attempting to raise oil prices ahead of the U.S. midterm elections, and it should be noted that this shipment accounts for 7% of the approximately 4 million barrels per day consumed by the United States.

If this tanker delivers its cargo to New York, it will be the first time in over three years that a shipment of Russian fuel has entered the United States. President Joe Biden had banned Russian imports in 2022. While the Trump administration had only issued a six-month exemption for diesel, this adds to the significance of this shipment.

Analysts also point out that Russia has generally resumed its exports after a nearly six-week ban due to the impact of the Ukraine attacks on Russian refineries. New shipments have been loaded for Turkey and Brazil, and Russian diesel production is expected to return to full production levels by the end of this year.
