The global strike of dock workers in 113 ports across 22 countries is one of the largest coordinated labor movements in history. This global action, titled 'Dock workers do not work for war,' has significantly expanded from previous smaller movements that included 20 ports in seven countries.
Key Ports in the Strike
In this strike, key ports include Hamburg, Le Havre, Marseille, Genoa, Gioia Tauro, Piraeus, Tangier Med, Mersin, and Nova Shova in India. The CGT labor union in France has announced a 24-hour strike at around 24 ports and predicts that up to 95 percent of national port activities may be halted.

Strike in Italy and Greece
Italy has also recorded a nationwide 24-hour strike at all ports, coinciding with a general strike in other transport sectors. In Greece, seafarers' unions have also announced a 24-hour stoppage expected to disrupt ferry services in the ports of Piraeus, Rafina, Lavrio, Patras, and Igoumenitsa.
Organizers of this campaign estimate that participating unions manage about 40 percent of Mediterranean container traffic and that up to 40,000 containers may be delayed. However, the actual level of disruption remains unclear. Some ports are holding demonstrations instead of halting cargo operations, while officials at the port of Genoa expect to experience relatively limited disruptions.
Main Objectives of the Campaign
This campaign primarily opposes the transportation of military cargo through civilian ports and also calls for improved wages, working conditions, and protection for workers against automation. Although these large-scale movements are unprecedented for this particular campaign, claims that this is the largest dock strike in the world have not been confirmed.
Separately, a strike that may involve 250 dock guards on November 1 threatens operations in Los Angeles and Long Beach, although negotiations to prevent the stoppage are ongoing. Italy is also facing another general strike on November 20.
