Mohammad Jafar Ghaempanah, Executive Vice President and Head of the Presidential Office, during a visit to the Central Headquarters for Combating Goods and Currency Smuggling, emphasized the necessity of data-driven governance. He urged executive agencies to complete their information and connect their data to the systems of this headquarters to assist in more accurate decision-making and more effective confrontation with smuggling.
Development of Information Infrastructure
Ghaempanah, referring to currency limitations and the challenges in providing some essential goods for the people, considered the establishment of information infrastructure for monitoring the flow of goods, currency, and fuel as a fundamental action. He emphasized the role of this infrastructure in identifying violations and alleviating bottlenecks, stating that the established systems enable monitoring the flow of goods from entry points to warehouses and identifying potential violations.
Monitoring Fuel and Currency Smuggling
The Executive Vice President also referred to the creation of a system for monitoring the status and identifying the amount and routes of fuel smuggling. He stated that these actions would help identify bottlenecks in the currency sector and clarify areas needing reform in processes, guidelines, and laws. The collected information, in collaboration with various agencies, is made available in the form of a management dashboard at the national level for managers and decision-makers in the country.
Ghaempanah emphasized the necessity of completing this information and urged ministries, law enforcement, and other relevant agencies to cooperate in providing information and connecting their data to the management dashboard of the headquarters. He added, "We must increasingly base our governance on data, and the management decisions and policies of the country should also be based on accurate, up-to-date, and reliable information."
Reducing Smuggling Opportunities
The Executive Vice President also stressed the need to reduce the opportunities for smuggling and expressed hope that with planning commensurate with the country's capacities, the ground for a gradual movement towards a more realistic fuel price, alongside an increase in the real income of the people, would be provided. He stated that the ultimate goal of these actions is to minimize the opportunities for smuggling goods, currency, and fuel and to eliminate organized smuggling in the country.
