German researchers are developing an AI-based decision support system aimed at assisting maritime traffic controllers in managing waterways increasingly used by autonomous and semi-autonomous ships. This project, known as LEAS-PRO, seeks to create a prototype capable of analyzing developing traffic situations and providing recommendations to coastal-based maritime traffic service operators.
Details of the LEAS-PRO Project
The LEAS-PRO project has been initiated by the Fraunhofer FKIE Institute, and its goal is to combine traffic data, ship movements, and situational context to support operators in identifying hazards and responding to complex situations. The system is designed to assist human controllers in enhancing situational awareness and reducing cognitive load, especially in conditions where maritime traffic is becoming increasingly diverse and complex.

Project Goals and Timeline
The ultimate goal of this system is not to replace human controllers but to improve situational awareness and facilitate maritime traffic management. Work on the LEAS-PRO project will continue until July 2028, during which the research team will analyze traffic data to achieve optimal solutions for maritime traffic management.
Given the rapid advancements in technology and the increasing number of autonomous ships, this project could play a significant role in enhancing safety and efficiency in maritime traffic. Especially in conditions where maritime traffic is becoming increasingly complex, having an AI system that can assist controllers could help reduce risks and accidents.
