The European Investment Bank (EIB) has allocated $115 million for upgrading the infrastructure of Klaipeda Port in Lithuania. This loan will help Klaipeda Port, the largest port in Lithuania, improve its infrastructure to accommodate NATO military vessels.
Project Details
The port upgrade project includes the construction of a new terminal for cruise ships, aimed at replacing the old and worn-out docks in the port. This new terminal, measuring 900 meters in length, will provide space for two cruise ships and will be located in the center of the old port area. The planned developments include new multifunctional areas, public parks, a marina, and a new port management building.

Strategic and Security Impacts
This project, alongside civilian improvements, includes modifications in accordance with NATO standards. In the event of a ground attack from Russia, Klaipeda Port could serve as a key point for the movement of NATO forces and equipment. Given that maritime transport is an efficient means for such movements, this port will play a vital role in ensuring the security of the Baltic countries.
Last month, the Danish army conducted exercises for heavily protected commercial ship convoys in the Baltic Sea. These exercises were carried out to prepare for potential wartime conditions and highlight the need to strengthen naval operations in the event of military tensions.
Overall, the Klaipeda Port upgrade project not only helps enhance the infrastructure of this port but also contributes to strengthening security and solidarity in Europe, representing a significant investment in response to existing security threats in the region.
