Direct electricity imports for petrochemical industries and large energy-intensive units from neighboring countries have begun in order to reduce energy imbalance. The Ministry of Energy has provided the necessary infrastructure for these industries to directly purchase electricity from foreign producers.
Details of Electricity Imports
Mostafa Rajabi Mashhadi, Deputy for Electricity and Energy at the Ministry of Energy, explained that the share of electricity imports from land borders is estimated to be between 2 to 3 percent. He also pointed out the high capacity of northern countries to supply and exchange electrical power. This action is particularly important for petrochemical industries that have a pressing need for energy.

Challenges and Opportunities
Rajabi Mashhadi also noted that about 4,700 megawatts of power plants owned by industries and petrochemicals have been taken offline for various reasons. He predicted that by the end of this year, a maximum of 50 percent of these power plants will be refurbished and return to the production cycle. This refurbishment and direct electricity imports could significantly reduce the challenge of energy imbalance.
The capacities for exchanging and importing electrical power from neighboring countries include various axes that the Ministry of Energy is seeking to utilize to meet the needs of industries. Given the increasing energy demands of industries and rising demand in this sector, these actions could greatly assist in solving existing problems.
