The confirmation of a tanker collision in the Strait of Hormuz has raised new concerns about maritime security in this sensitive area. Maritime reports indicate that on Sunday, a tanker passing through the Strait of Hormuz was hit by a suspicious projectile, resulting in a fire on the vessel.
Details of the Incident and UKMTO's Response
According to received reports, this incident has been confirmed by UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) and classified as a suspicious activity, although this entity has opted to use the term "suspicious activity" instead of labeling it as an attack. Fortunately, the crew of the vessel was unharmed, and the fire resulting from the collision was extinguished.

This report follows Iran's claim of targeting or hunting 19 vessels outside the routes designated by Tehran for passage through the Strait of Hormuz. However, Iran has yet to specify the names of these vessels and has not provided evidence of the targeting of 19 ships.
Reporting Challenges and Data Issues
UKMTO is recognized as one of the key sources of maritime security in the shipping industry, but its reporting system is voluntary. In this regard, vessels are strongly encouraged to register their voyages and provide daily reports in the event of incidents. Meanwhile, vessels that do not participate in this program may experience delays in receiving military assistance.
Recent reports indicate that information regarding maritime incidents may be delayed. For example, an attack that occurred on September 16 was not publicly reported until September 18. This highlights a failure in timely incident reporting and a lack of transparency in maritime information.
Given these conditions, researchers and maritime analysts are striving to obtain an accurate picture of maritime traffic and incidents in the Strait of Hormuz. In recent years, ADNOC has announced that 15 of its vessels have been targeted by missile or drone attacks, adding complexity to the analysis of maritime incidents.
