Fugro carried out a project under a geological survey contract for Petronas Carigali in the Megah and Limbayong fields in the state of Sabah on the east coast of Malaysia. The aim of this project is to develop Malaysia's offshore resources and provide vital geological data for identifying seabed and subsurface hazards.
Project Details and Technology Used
This survey assists Petronas Carigali in making informed engineering decisions and supports the safe development of these assets in challenging deep-water conditions. The project demonstrates the application of AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) technology for geological hazard surveys in very deep waters. Fugro deployed its AUV named Echo Surveyor 8 from the Fugro Equator vessel.

This AUV collected high-resolution data, including bathymetric, geological, and shallow subsurface data, as it approached the seabed to assist in assessing geological hazards, engineering design, and planning the development of the fields.
Data Monitoring and Quality Control
The project was supported by Fugro's remote operations center in Kuala Lumpur, which provided data quality control and continuous processing to meet the project's tight schedules. This offshore campaign commenced in June 2026 and successfully concluded in August 2026.
The development of these fields is part of ongoing efforts to exploit oil and gas resources in Malaysia's deep waters, representing a significant step towards strengthening energy infrastructure and creating job opportunities in this sector. This technology and the collected data can help optimize future operations for Petronas Carigali and other companies active in the region.
