Fugro has signed new contracts to conduct geophysical and geotechnical surveys in the offshore waters of Timor-Leste. These contracts are aimed at supporting the planning and development of offshore energy infrastructure related to two gas projects, including the larger TLNG development and the Bayu-Undan pipeline projects.
Contract Details
These contracts include a six-month geotechnical survey and a twelve-month geophysical survey, which are planned as part of a broader survey campaign for the proposed pipeline routes. These activities are expected to commence in the first quarter of 2027, following the completion of geophysical work in the third quarter of 2026.
Project Goals and Benefits
The survey campaign is designed to support the larger Sunrise gas export pipeline from the larger Sunrise field to Timor-Leste for the development of TLNG at Natarbora located on the southern coast of Timor-Leste, as well as the Bayu-Undan pipeline to Natarbora. The goal of these surveys is to provide a comprehensive understanding of seabed and subsurface conditions along the proposed corridors to assist in route selection and future engineering.
This project will be supported by Fugro's remote operations center in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The survey will be conducted from Fugro's multi-purpose vessel Etive.
Traveling Dr. Haman, Regional Business Line Director APAC at Fugro, stated: "Winning the geophysical, geotechnical, and geotechnical contracts demonstrates our ability to provide integrated solutions for site identification in complex deep-water developments. By combining our expertise with deep-sea technologies, we can deliver high-quality geospatial data and engineering insights to aid informed decision-making, reduce project risk, and advance the larger Sunrise and Bayu Undan developments in Timor-Leste."
The Bayu-Undan project is a gas and condensate field located 250 kilometers south of East Timor and has been in production since 2004. This project has recently received its seventh extension of the Production Sharing Contract (PSC).
The larger Sunrise development, located about 140 kilometers south of Timor-Leste, includes the Sunrise and Troubadour gas and condensate fields. Discovered in 1974, this project contains resources equivalent to 5.1 trillion cubic feet of gas and 226 million barrels of condensate, with natural gas production expected to commence between 2028 and 2030.
