Wärtsilä Corporation has received an order to supply engines and equipment for floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) vessels. These vessels are being constructed at Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) for the Delfin LNG project based in the United States. These advanced engines and equipment will contribute to efficient, reliable, and environmentally sustainable operations at LNG marine facilities and will accelerate the development of new LNG export infrastructure.

Project Details and Technical Requirements

This order was placed in the second quarter of 2026. Given the global need for developing flexible and cost-effective methods for utilizing gas resources and increasing export capacity, FLNG projects are playing an increasing role in supplying and delivering LNG to the market. These facilities, with the capability to produce, store, and export LNG directly from the coast, can reduce the need for land-based infrastructure and expedite project development.

Bjorn Oxfords, Senior Marine and Offshore Engineer for the Delfin project, notes that "the ability to disconnect in the event of a storm warning and move to a safe location for an FLNG vessel off the coast of Louisiana is essential. The selected propulsion arrangement, including the capability to lift equipment for internal maintenance before the storm season, is part of the solution designed for reliable operations and ensuring the safety of crew and assets."

Facilities and Equipment Used

This vessel will service the Port Delfin LNG project, located about 40 nautical miles off the coast of Louisiana, and will be supplied through existing gas pipelines onshore and offshore. Wärtsilä has closely collaborated with project partners during the pre-engineering phase to develop a propulsion arrangement tailored to the specific needs of the vessel.

Yangjin Jung, Vice President of the Marine Supply Team at SHI, emphasizes that "we are pleased to continue our collaboration with Wärtsilä on the Delfin LNG project. Wärtsilä's reliable engines and equipment, supported by close cooperation between the two companies throughout the project, have helped meet the specific needs of the project. We hope to work together to deliver a successful FLNG project and strengthen our collaboration in the growing FLNG market."

Wärtsilä will supply three Wärtsilä 46DF dual-fuel engines along with an advanced exhaust gas treatment system including SCR and Oxicat technologies. The vessel will also be equipped with three specially designed thrusters, the largest produced by Wärtsilä and currently the largest in the world. These technologies will contribute to fuel-saving operations, reduced emissions, and enhanced operational capabilities.

Brand Bertram, Vice President of Wärtsilä's propulsion division, stated: "The growing interest in FLNG projects reflects the increasing need for flexible energy infrastructure that can be rapidly deployed and operate efficiently. Success in these programs depends on optimizing efficiency, reliability, and environmental performance from the early design stages. By combining our expertise in propulsion, vessel integration, and lifecycle support, we help customers develop solutions that meet current operational needs and future expectations."

Wärtsilä's equipment is scheduled for delivery in the third quarter of 2027, and the vessel is expected to be operational in early 2030.
