The urgent proposal for Iran's withdrawal from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) has been presented to the Islamic Consultative Assembly. Hossein Ali Haji Deligani, representative of Shahin Shahr, presented this plan to the parliament's presiding board during a public webinar session on Sunday, September 29, emphasizing the necessity of reviewing it. This action takes place at a time when Iran's nuclear file has once again become one of the main topics in the political and security landscape.

Sensitive Conditions and Reasons for the Proposal

Haji Deligani, referring to the referral of Iran's file to the Security Council by the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency, considered Iran's continued membership in the NPT to be costly and stated that the country's interest lies in withdrawing from this treaty. Currently, the issue of the NPT is no longer merely a legal and technical matter but has become part of the discussion on deterrence and Iran's national security. Proponents of withdrawal from this treaty believe that continuing membership in a framework that has failed to guarantee the rights of its members against political and military pressures could incur greater costs for the country.

Examining the Security and Political Consequences of Withdrawal

Conversely, a group of representatives and analysts believe that withdrawal from the NPT without the necessary conditions could increase international pressures against Iran. Ahmad Bakhshaei Ardestani, a member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of the parliament, pointed out that the necessary deterrent capabilities must be established in the country for withdrawal from this treaty. He emphasized that leaving the NPT without the necessary conditions could bring new costs for Iran.

Aladdin Boroujerdi, another member of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, has cited the performance of the International Atomic Energy Agency as one of the reasons for raising the issue of withdrawal from the NPT and questioned what benefit there is in remaining in an international organization that cannot defend the rights of its members. Boroujerdi also stressed that the final decision regarding withdrawal from the NPT should be made by responsible bodies, including the Supreme National Security Council and the Islamic Consultative Assembly.

Legal and Political Dimensions of Withdrawal from the NPT

According to Article 10 of the NPT, any member state may withdraw from the treaty if extraordinary events jeopardize its supreme security interests. However, withdrawal from the NPT is not an immediate decision and does not occur without a legal process; the withdrawing country must notify the other member states and the United Nations Security Council of its decision. For this reason, decision-making regarding withdrawal from this treaty has extensive legal dimensions and political and security consequences.

Currently, recent developments in Iran's nuclear file and military attacks on nuclear facilities have created a new atmosphere in Iran's relations with international organizations. Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, has stated regarding the future of Iran's membership in the NPT that the actions of the United States and Israel could pave the way for considering withdrawal from this treaty, but a final decision has not yet been made in this regard.

The Future of Iran's Cooperation with International Organizations

This issue is being examined at a time when Iran's nuclear doctrine remains based on adherence to the fatwa of the martyr leader regarding the prohibition of nuclear weapons. However, existing contradictions and tensions have cast a shadow of ambiguity over the future of Iran's cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency and other international organizations. Given these developments, it remains to be seen what decisions the parliament and other responsible bodies will make regarding the NPT.
