Transnet has decided to build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal at East London Port in South Africa to enhance the port's competitiveness. This port, located at the mouth of the Buffalo River, is the only commercial river port in South Africa and is primarily known as an export hub for the region's automotive industry.

Details of the LNG Terminal Project

The new terminal will be designed to receive and dispatch LNG via ships, pipelines, and tankers, and will include storage facilities and related infrastructure. It will be constructed on a pristine site of approximately 8,900 hectares on the western edge of the port. The terminal is intended to provide sustainable energy for LNG consumers and industrial users, with the goal of boosting industrial growth, creating jobs, and fostering economic development in the region.

Transnet is also seeking to attract a private operator to invest in this project. The selected operator will be responsible for the design, financing, development, construction, operation, and maintenance of the terminal, all under a 25-year contract. The project costs have not yet been determined, but the facilities will be transferred to a government entity upon completion of the contract.

Impacts on Energy and the Environment

The construction of this terminal is part of Transnet's strategy to develop port infrastructure and diversify energy sources in the Eastern Cape region. This area is currently facing increasing demand for natural gas, and the new terminal could help alleviate the electricity grid loading issues in South Africa. The country is heavily reliant on coal-fired power plants, and a strategy to replace coal with gas and renewable energy sources is being developed.

The manager of East London Port, Sphiwe Mthembu, described this project as a significant milestone in attracting new investments to the port and advancing long-term development goals. He added that by creating a conducive environment for new industries and emerging business opportunities, Transnet is preparing East London Port to meet the changing market needs.

Interested operators have until the end of February next year to submit their proposals. This project could serve as a catalyst for industrial growth and sustainable development in the region, enhancing the port's capabilities.
