TotalEnergies, the French energy giant, has recently signed an agreement to sell 40 percent of its stake in the offshore OPL257 block in Nigeria to South Atlantic Petroleum Limited (SAPETRO). This move is aimed at preparing for a future appraisal campaign that could lead to connecting undeveloped fields to existing production, storage, and floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) infrastructure for cost-effective development.

Agreement Details and Partnership Structure

With this agreement, TotalEnergies will achieve a 50 percent operational participation in this asset, while SAPETRO and Conoil will hold 40 and 10 percent of the stake, respectively. The OPL257 block is located 150 kilometers off the coast of Nigeria and is adjacent to the PPL261 block, where TotalEnergies and its partners, including SAPETRO, discovered the Egina South field in 2005. This field is simultaneously located in both blocks. The completion of this deal is subject to standard conditions, including regulatory approvals.

Future Plans and Development Strategy

TotalEnergies has announced that an appraisal campaign in the OPL257 section of the Egina South field will be conducted in the coming months to support the development of this field as a tie-in to the Egina FPSO, which is located approximately 30 kilometers away. The company has stated that it is pleased to have SAPETRO as its partner in the OPL257 block as well as in the adjacent PPL261 block. Strengthening this long-term collaboration will lay the groundwork for a rapid appraisal campaign and subsequent development of the Egina South field if successful.

TotalEnergies' strategy for developing low-cost and low-carbon resources aligns well with this collaboration and seeks to optimize its costs by utilizing existing facilities.
