The Shanghai Logistics Terminal has achieved the first phase of conversion for foreign trade operations. This project has been approved by the local government of Shanghai and allows the terminal to engage in international trade activities within the framework of national and local regulations. The logistics terminal, recognized as one of the important facilities at the Shanghai container port, has an annual capacity of 2.6 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units).
Details of the Conversion Project
This project aims to convert an old site related to coal and minerals into an automated container facility. The first phase of this project, which is set to be operational in August 2024, includes a 100,000-ton wharf and four 10,000-ton wharfs. This change allows the terminal to operate with high container volumes and has recorded a record of 8,373 TEU in a single day on August 1, 2024.

Impacts on Trade and Capacity
The logistics facilities, with this change, have expanded their trade scope and currently serve as a key point in loading and unloading containers at the Shanghai port. However, this change does not mean a physical increase in capacity, but rather new permits allow the terminal to engage in foreign trade activities. Additionally, the second phase of the logistics project is nearing completion, which will add an annual capacity of 1.4 million TEU.
The local government of Shanghai has instructed the city's commerce commission to make the necessary arrangements for the practical implementation of this project under national and local regulations. This comprehensive plan converts the old coal, mineral, and oil facilities into automated container infrastructure, bringing the terminal's overall designed annual capacity to approximately 4 million TEU.
