The fall of three 40-foot containers from the APL Dublin ship into the water at the Port of Los Angeles on Tuesday at 11:20 AM caused the disruption of loading operations and the establishment of a safe area by the United States Navy. This incident occurred near Pier 302 during container loading operations.
Safety Measures and Responses
Port of Los Angeles-Long Beach regulatory forces immediately responded to the incident, and a Navy boat crew was dispatched to the scene. Additionally, the Los Angeles Fire Department and the Port of Los Angeles Police participated in the rescue operations. The Navy established a safe zone with a radius of 400 yards around the incident area to ensure safety.

Details of the Containers and Their Cargo
Of the three 40-foot containers that fell into the water, one has been recovered, and the other two are still underwater, but their locations have been identified and marked. The cargo inside these containers has been classified as non-hazardous. However, the United States Navy has not yet officially identified the APL Dublin ship or disclosed the cause of the container falls.
This incident occurs nearly a year after 95 containers fell from the Mississippi ship at the Port of Long Beach in September 2022. That incident required extensive rescue operations involving divers, side sonar, and robotic equipment to locate the submerged or falling containers. While the recent incident has occurred on a smaller scale, underwater containers can pose navigation hazards until they are identified and recovered.
