WinGD Company, led by Dominik Schneiter, emphasized the innovation challenges in the shipbuilding industry. These challenges are particularly evident as shipbuilders face pressure to produce uniform and predictable products. Currently, large shipbuilders, due to their full order books and lack of dry dock space, prefer to focus on producing fixed and tested models instead of accepting custom orders.

Innovation Challenges in Shipbuilding

Schneiter states: "Shipbuilders typically work based on standard designs and fixed production processes. When new technologies such as modern propulsion systems or hybrid solutions are introduced, they require additional engineering work and integration. Shipbuilders must strike a delicate balance between innovation and ensuring delivery and operational efficiency. This has now slowed the adoption of the latest technologies and remains a significant challenge for the industry."

New Opportunities in the Market

Despite the existing challenges, there are options to circumvent these barriers. Smaller shipbuilders may embrace innovation by recognizing opportunities in custom orders. For example, Green Maritime Infrastructure signed an order for two hydrogen-powered cargo ships from Chowgule Shipyard in India at the SMM exhibition. These ships will operate only on coastal routes and are a rare example of high-spec hydrogen propulsion technology.

Ultimately, selecting efficient technologies that make installation easier for shipbuilders can facilitate operations. Mattias Gunnarsson, Vice President of Business Solutions at MacGregor, says: "We strongly emphasize sustainable electric solutions, not only because of their sustainability but also due to ease of installation. The absence of hydraulic piping, washing, and leaks reduces installation time, and shipbuilders realize that these installation hours mean money. Many shipbuilders are trying to shorten their delivery times to free up new space, so simple installation is an opportunity for them."
