Eni, the Italian company active in the oil and gas industry, announced the start of gas production from the Maha field in the West Ganal block located in Indonesia's Kodeh basin. This field is situated at a water depth of approximately 1,000 meters and includes two subsea production wells connected to the floating production unit (FPU) Jangrik. The distance from these wells to the floating production unit is about 12 kilometers.
Details of gas production and transportation
After initial processing of the gas on board the FPU, this gas will be transported via a network of pipelines to the domestic market and the Bontang liquefaction plant. The Maha field can produce 250 million standard cubic feet per day, which brings the combined production from the Jangrik FPU and the southern hub to 750 million cubic feet per day. Projects Gendalo and Gendang are expected to add to this production in 2028, extending production beyond the end of this decade.
Eni's strategy in gas resource development
According to Eni, the startup and production at the Maha field, following the startup of Merakes East in May 2025 and the final investment decisions announced in March 2026 for the North Hub (Geng North and Gehem) and South Hub (Gendalo and Gendang) projects, emphasizes the company's broader strategy for the optimal development of discovered gas resources in Indonesia's Kodeh basin.
The Italian company further stated: "Maha is a key component in the development of the southern hub and the exploitation of Indonesia's offshore gas resources. These results reflect the close collaboration and shared goals of all stakeholders, including Searah, its shareholders, and SKK Migas, the oil and gas regulatory agency in Indonesia."
Eni is also directly overseeing the Peri-Mahakam PSC, Makassar Strait PSC, and the recently awarded Sapukala block. The company also signed two binding agreements last month for the sale of shares to Pertamina and Medco in selected upstream assets in Indonesia managed by Searah.
