MET International, the commercial and wholesale arm of the Swiss-based energy group, and British energy giant Shell have signed a long-term agreement for the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States. This agreement aims to strengthen Europe's energy security and meet the needs of customers on the continent.

Details of the Agreement and Its Objectives

The agreement signed between MET Group and Shell includes the supply of LNG from Shell's U.S. portfolio over a multi-year period. This agreement, known as a Sales and Purchase Agreement (SPA), will enhance the long-term cooperation between the two companies in the LNG and gas trade while supporting MET Group's supply diversification strategy for its European customers.

Hubert Wiegno, CEO of MET Group, stated: "Reliable access to U.S. LNG enhances our ability to provide better and more flexible services in European energy markets. This customer-centric approach makes MET an energy champion on the continent."

The Role of LNG in Europe's Energy Security

Shell has projected that demand for LNG will increase by 65% by 2050. Given the rising demand for diversified gas supply strategies, MET Group has emphasized that access to U.S. LNG is increasingly important for the company and its customers. The company also noted that LNG supplies related to the U.S. market can expand supply options while reducing the risk of volatility in European gas markets.

In July 2024, the two companies signed a ten-year LNG purchase agreement that provides MET Group with long-term access to U.S. LNG and strengthens the company's supply diversification strategy. This agreement aims to enhance cooperation and meet customer needs.

Additionally, earlier this year, the two companies expanded their collaboration through a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed in Washington, D.C., to explore more opportunities for LNG supply and trade to strengthen Europe's energy security.
