Samsung Heavy Industries has introduced a standardized Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) production platform for the Canadian market. On October 23, 2023, the company hosted a technical seminar on FLNG in Victoria, Canada, in collaboration with the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA). About 100 representatives from local resource developers, indigenous communities, government agencies, and financial institutions gathered to discuss and exchange ideas on LNG collaboration.

Introduction of the New FLNG Platform

This platform is optimized to connect Canada's abundant natural gas resources to global markets. Wang-Keun Lee, Executive Vice President and Head of the Shipbuilding and Marine Business at Samsung Heavy, stated at the seminar: "FLNG is a competitive solution that can contribute to the growth of Canada's LNG industry."

Samsung Heavy emphasizes that Canada has rich natural gas resources and suitable access to Asian markets. The company also introduced its FLNG platform as an environmentally friendly and economical option for LNG development.

Details of the Cedar LNG Project

Samsung Heavy has highlighted the Cedar FLNG project as a prominent example for the Canadian market. This floating facility, weighing approximately 50,000 tons, was awarded to Samsung Heavy in 2024 and is set to be launched in June 2025. The unit will be located near Kitimat, British Columbia, receiving natural gas through a land pipeline, liquefying and storing it at sea, and then transferring LNG for export to ships.

The Cedar LNG project has recently achieved a significant milestone, with overall construction progress now over 70 percent complete. As the world's first LNG facility with majority indigenous ownership, it is expected to be operational by late 2028.

At the Victoria seminar, Samsung Heavy explored areas of collaboration with government representatives, LNG developers, indigenous communities, and financial institutions. Given the need for cooperation among various stakeholders for government permits, gas supply, and infrastructure, the company is looking to create new opportunities in the global FLNG market.

Samsung Heavy Industries plans to go beyond the role of an EPC contractor and provide tailored solutions from the early stages of project development. The company seeks to build partnerships with local entities and support future LNG projects in Canada.

Stuart Taylor, Executive Advisor of Cedar LNG, emphasized the importance of Samsung Heavy's FLNG solutions, stating that this technology can help optimize project costs and development time while reducing environmental impacts.
